Yes, but there's little point when you can just buy a touring with the six-cylinder already in it. If you really want to convert the 318i, sell the 525i, and use the money to buy a smashed 325i, 323i or 328i E36, then you can just do a straight swap of everything you need. Even if you have to spend a few hundred more than you get for the E34 to find an E36, it'll still work out cheaper and less hassle.

Also, the E34 2.5 is NOT the same block as the E36 318i.

Yes, however you will need a manual box from an E36 320/325 as well. You will need to modify the cars wiring loom to accept the ECU from the 2.5 engine as well as uprate the brakes and suspension. You will also need the engine mounts from an E36 320/325 as well as a lot of other bits and pieces to make it work. In short it's possible but not worth it. You can buy an E36 325 for less than the cost of fitting an E34 engine to your 318 and that's before you even consider the value of the time it will take you.
Give a 4.0 Rover V8 with a SD1 box a try first.

525 will probably need a different crank and a different box to fit/survive in 318
Yes its the same block
