Sports exhaust on an Auto BMW?

I was wondering if it is worth it to put a Sports Exhaust on a BMW with Automatic transmission. Will it:

a) Still improve my cars performance, and

b) Will it sound good (i have heard that sports exhausts sound like rubbish on an auto)

the performance of an exhaust system is not dictated by the transmission. the sound and performance of an exhaust is related to the engine, regardless of transmission.

some people confuse this, because auto transmissions are typically programmed to shift at relatively low RPMs during normal driving. in this case, you typically won't get the full benefit of the exhaust system. however, if you hold the accelerator down, even the auto transmissions will rev higher and give you the better sound and better utilize the increased exhaust flow capacity.

bottom line, the exhaust system's performance is related to the engine, not the transmission. but different transmission types may require you to drive differently to get the engine revs up in order to gain the full benefit of a performance exhaust system.

Sound is going to be a personal opinion. What sounds good to me may be irritating to you. Try to see if you can hear a local's car with the exhaust your interested in.

From what I've seen in most BMW's, HP/TQ gains from a catatlytic converter back, exhaust is neglible. Dont expect much in terms of seat of the pants feel. Your perceived increase may be better since you'll hear it audibly. Overall, you may feel a bit more power on the top end, but lose some tq down low. It's give and take on a naturally aspirated motor.

Now, the exhaust in conjunction of various other engines mods are a different story.
