I called a bmw parts shop though they are BMW dealer. The guy who picked my call said I can top off my transmission with dexron III fluid? Is this safe ?

The guys at Autozone helped me. I was going to put Diexron III in my Ram 1500 but they told me not to. So, go to a store like that and they can help you out.

Transmission oil pan will be labeled with either Texaco ETL -7045 or Dexron III,
Dexron 111 fluid is right, but you check which brand you are buying,There are some low grade dexron in the market.
Just look for branded fluid.You are safe.
