Take out the bulb so you have it in front of you. If there is a code number on it search for it on ebay or just any search engine. Lightbulbs are pretty standard so you shouldn't have to pay dealer prices.

no, as long as they are compatible at the plug. i bought few aftermarket (napa) for my 2000 328i and worked just fine.
I have a local dealer which specialises in both foreign and domestic, you most likely do to. I would look in the yellow pages for automotive parts distributors which are not popular, such as Auto Zone, All Car, Checker and call one of them. If they don't specialise in foreign parts ask them if they know someone that does, this is what I did and I have gone there every time since. One other thing you may want to try is calling a service repair shop which works on foreign vehicles and they will most likely guide you in the right direction.

As far as simple things like bulbs, I would try NAPA. I have owned four BMW's so far and you must make sure the bulbs are the correct wattage, if not, you will have an error displayed. The brand "Wagner" makes the correct wattage and this is what I have been using, much cheaper than going to the BMW dealer.
