I have a BMW 3 series 316i Compact, built in 1999. I have owed the car for about 5 months. When I drive the car for a period of around 15 miles there is a squealing noise from the engine bay. I have taken the car to many different garages for their diagnosis, each garage has different conclusions.
At first I thought it was a bearing noise from the tensioner pully, alternator, water pump or something similar. I had the water pump replaced and it still makes the noise.
At the weekend a garage told me it was definatetly a blocked breather system, they removed the oil cap whilst the engine was running and this caused air to be sucked in rapidly through the open oil cap.
Further information - The noise only starts after about 10 - 15 miles of driving. It gets louder and louder as I'm driving. The noise mainly happens at idle and goes when I accelerate. The noise doesn't change tone or volume when pressing the clutch.
Has anyone else come across this problem?
Blocked breather system on a BMW E36 causing a 'squealing' noise?triumph
Never, but have you checked the cooling system overflow for holes or blockages. The valve could be releasing some pressure or could have a pin prick somewhere causing the squeal.
Just a thought.
