The slang for Mercedes is Benz. But both are German engineered, known for their high quality. Consumer Reports hasn't been impressed with Benz lately, but they never do like luxury cars.

they are both great machines, it really all depends on personal taste.

In quietness and smoothness of ride-Mercedes.
Depends on what you like. If you're after the best handling, and overall driving experience, BMW is best. If you're more interested in luxury, and gadgets, then you're probably going to like Mercedes.
Both cars are extremely high quality products. I am being told from my mechanic friends that Mercedes is starting to see a higher quantity of problems. They attribute this to the Chyrsler acquisition which turned out to be a disaster for the company. Both cars are expensive to repair - BMW is probably a little more.
