I am new to this forum and to owning a BMW. It was in shop for 5 weeks. I blew a headgasket after an overheating problem.. 2500$ later and first day home but woke to see a redish fluid near front right tire. I looked under the car what looks like an axle connecting the two front tires (please bare with me) with a plastic springing looking hose, that is where the fluid is coming from. i am so afraid to drive it to the automotive shop to get looked at. does anyone know if this is serious or what the fluid is so that I can do further research? please help! Jane
I woke to (97 528i bmw)a redish fluid (looks clean) near inside right front tire, can anyone identify?symantic
Brake fluid is not red. It's coming from a power steering hose. They didn't tighten it up enough. If it's real slow, then it's not a big deal, as long as you get it fixed Monday. Get some fluid from the store so that the pump doesn't run dry. Check it a couple times a day until you get it to shop. When you said the springy plastic covered hose, I knew right away. Thank you that was a great description.

the only fluid that i know of that is red is maybe powersteering fluid. which i think is the same as brake fluid so if it is by your tire, my guess is brake fluid. should be a pretty easy and cheap fix.
from my experience it sound like transmission fluid
Sorry to be the bearer od bad news, Sounds like the transmission is going out!
It's your Transmission fluid or Power steering fluid. They are the old 2 fluids that are reddish. Check your power steering pump for leaks and check your steering rack to see if there is a small tear (common problem).
could this be the steering rack, red fluid is transmssion or power steering fluid , check the steering fluid see if it's low
Could be brake fluid. Does your car have an ABS light on the panel display when you turn it on?
Most likely coolant (the stuff in liquid fluid that is used to keep the engine cool, and it's contained in the radiator and reserve container. However, if it's thicker than water, could be a transmission fluid leak or power steering (which I doubt). To check, I would have a reputible guy get up underneath where the leak is coming from and look for a steel line or rubber (black) hose just above the area where the leak is. My bet? Trans Fluid leak if an automatic, Coolant if otherwise. Roy
Red fluid usually means transmission fluid. I'm guessing that the transmission cooler line wasn't fastened properly or it sprung a leak. If it is transmission fluid, do not drive the vehicle. Have it towed back to the shop that fixed your headgasket and have them take a look at it. It may be related to the work they did or it may be a coincidence that it is now leaking. Either way, have it looked at before you drive the car.
Brake fluid, there's a leak in the brake line.
Sounds like brakefluid. I wouldn't drive it either. I would also sell the BMW and buy a VW.
That sounds like transmission fluid - you should get it checked out ASAP
