I just purchased a 2002 BMW 530i Sport. It has 82,000 miles. What kind of maintenance should be done

And which problems should i be aware of? It has a BMW Warranty till 10/15/08 or till it reaches 100,000 miles.

Thank you for your advice!

2002 E39 530i has a M54B30 engine.

The parts I always change whenever buying a used BMW are

1. water pump

2. expansion tank,

3. coolant hoses

4. thermostat.

Also, check for these:

1. worn lower control arm bushings

2. alternator

3. battery (if still from factory since 2002)

4. belts (look for cracks)

A chilton's manual will list the maintenance that should be done. Yeah, I agree that you should have the dealer do any maintenance while still under warranty.
I would advise you check thoroughly of any immediate problem get it sorted out now and when it gets close to the end of the warranty make sure you do a overall maintenance going out of the warranty.
My advice: break everything and get it replaced while it's still under warranty. Parts are ridiculously expensive for these cars. My mother has the same car, a year newer. Her rack and pinion went out at 50,000 miles, cost over $3000, not including labor. This is why I buy American cars.
Just keep it serviced at the recommended intervals get bmw to carry out an oil consumption test before a 100000 and if you have the tiptronic transmission you may have problems when mileage gets high 150000 onwards.
