I just bought a 1997 BMW 740Li. It has 133,000 miles on it. How do I know what type of oil to use? I would hate to destroy the engine. It's such a nice car.

You definitely need to use synthetic, but the optimal weight of the oil is debatable, and you might consider varying it if you see unusual oil consumption with the grade you're using.

I would recommend changing the oil on your car immediately after purchase, because you don't know when the previous owner last did it. I use Petrosynth in my M5. It's a European brand that my mechanic uses and swears by. Everybody has a favorite.

Ask the BMW importer in your country. Cause he will recommend you the oil that recommends the mother company of the BMW.
Read the manual that comes with the car, if there is no manual look on the under side of the hood. There should be all kinds of specs about the emissions, vacume lines, and engine oil type and capacity

you should look under the hood OF COURSE bmw always recommends MOBIL it even has a sticker there. so look to see which grade it needs if not go to an auto zone or pep boys and ask them they should ask you a few questions and recommend something
BMW's current thinking is that all the OBD-2 1996 -1999 cars should be using 5W-30 Synthetic Oils and increasing the oil change interval to 10,000 miles. When the car is in good shape and regularly serviced, you can safely use the Synthetic Oils for 15,000 miles; and on the 2000 and newer cars you can go to 20,000 mile oil change intervals.
