What is the fair price for a 2002 BMW M5 with 54000 miles on in (So. California car)? It is in very good (not "mint") condition. This is a private sale.

I've been looking around for an older E39 M5 like yours and have seen them at around $30K to about $35K. Check out autotrader.com and cars.com and see what comparable M5's are going for around your area.

There are reliable websites such as Kelly Blue Book and /or Edmunds that report this information
My advice is not to look solely at the numbers- $31,000 but rather to consider the costs involved in owning this particular vehicle. The engine in this model tends to require major work every 30k miles or complete rebuilds every 60k miles. Lists of horror stories about all M engines can be found in internet consumer complaints boards. A rebuild or new engine run about the same price- $17k. The 6 speed manual transmission also tends to give problems with 60k miles and a rebuild will cost $4500. Rear bearings and sub frames also are a design flaw and require work within 80k miles. Not to mention the cost of maintenance and insurance for this vehicle is EXPENSIVE. In all your costs of ownership will soar to more than the value of this vehicle and is not a good value in my opinion. For the same pice you can have a new Infiniti G37 which will out perform the 2002 M5 anyday and will not require a trip to the repair shop every two days. Good Luck.
go to kbb.com should be like 20k
